Sea Swimming Blog #34
Day 73 Sea Swimming.
#34 of the blog.
Just the 3 of us made it down to St Aubin today… Jenny, Lynda and myself.
Whilst it looked like a pretty miserable day, there was no rain at the time, little wind and the sea was just about as flat as a pancake.
I’m sure there’s going to come a day when I think - “another grey day at St Aubin, what do I take photos of now” - and today was almost it, but seeing as the sea was so flat I thought I’d take my main DSLR camera in with me and get some photos from in the water (which I have been missing from the last couple of blog posts).
Though not quite as misty as yesterday there was still a nice eery mood in the bay that I wanted to take advantage of.
We walked in, tide a bit higher than it was yesterday but on the way down, with the blue tones of both Jenny and Lynda’s costumes & hats offering both a bit of contrast to the silvery water and sky yet also complimenting the cold feel of January in the sea.
After being in the water for about 10mins or so it was time for them to get out, but, having been taking pictures rather than swimming, I decided to put the camera away then get back in for a proper swim.
I briefly chatted to a chap named Rob on the way out, he seemed keen to join us next time for a dip and was also interested in photography.
I went for my swim as the tide quickly began to recede, walking out for a while then swimming as soon as there was enough water beneath me… it was beautifully clear and I started wishing I’d bought the waterproof camera out but there’s only so much time you can spend in water when it’s around 8 degrees Celsius so, having a few images in the bag, I swam on, intent on getting a bit of mileage in.
I swam out to the furthest buoy I could see then, like yesterday, thought it best to swim across the bay rather than head further out to sea . This across-the-bay-and-back swim was a process I completed a couple of times until I noticed that the tide was going out so fast that I was almost touching the sand on entry of each front crawl stroke.
I headed back in, swimming for as long as possible before finally accepting that I’d have to walk the last section where Rob was waiting and kindly took a couple of pictures of me on his phone.

… want to go again?”
