Day 93 Sea Swimming.

#54 of the blog.

Not entirely sure why but I really wasn’t feeling it today.

Might have been the late(ish) night and subsequent lack of sleep, or maybe yesterday’s camera incident was playing on my mind, who knows, but I could have quite easily turned the alarm off, pulled the covers up and stayed in bed this morning.

I checked my phone and saw we’d received a mightily generous donation from one of my friends on our Channel relay Just Giving page… then looked across the room and saw my underwater housing (fresh from being tested in the bath last night to make sure it was fully sealed) and thought… get up.

Today was planned as being fairly busy so if I didn’t swim early, when would I go?

So, St Aubin & Bluebelles it was.

The swell was a bit much on the slip and so the team decided a beach entry just to the right hand side would be a better option.

I put my backup camera in the housing and made my way down the stairs towards the sea which was still on the rise and was looking pretty choppy from this vantage point as well.

It didn’t take long for condensation to form (the heat of the camera evaporating onto the lens covering of the housing) and so I was almost instantly in two minds whether to bother shooting at all… may as well give it a try and see.

Turned out it was really difficult to control the camera in its new contraption + added to the fact that I had taken my glasses off for fear of them being taken out by the waves, I wasn’t 100% sure if I had managed to capture anything worthwhile at all.

We weren’t in long, with the waves seemingly getting bigger and bigger, dumping themselves down into the pebble beach… what had seemed like perfect conditions for a bit of bodyboarding fun turned a little dangerous - although I’m sure Rose still had a great time! Nearly lost her hat… but was smiling from ear to ear :)

I got back home and today it was my optician who had some good news - my prescription goggles had arrived.

Hopefully I can use them whilst shooting in the water with the waterproof housing and give myself a better chance of capturing some cool stuff… that’s if the surf and waves let me… it’d be nice to work together rather than against one another.

get up eight.”
